Cold Case Review : A decent template thriller! Cold Case

Cold Case Review

It's not an easy take to mix two complex genres and create equally entertaining output. The latest outing from Prithviraj titled Cold Case is a mixed bag with less intriguing moments.

An unidentified skull is found on a lake and ACP Satyajith who's in charge of investigation starts to unwrap the mystery. We are also introduced to Medha, a TV reporter who is trying to solve a personal disturbance. Cold Case is a hybrid genre focusing equally on thrills and scares. Debutante Thanu Balank has managed to pull off an intriguing mystery thriller which engages us only in parts.

Cold Case

Cold Case suffers from heavy spoon-feeding and artificiality. Few threads are left untied and the makers don't exploit its full potential. The sluggish pace in the latter hour slows down this template horror thriller. The final reveal wasn't much exciting and lack of WOW moments spoils the fun but the director has packed the film with few genuinely spooky elements to send chills down your spine. Cold Case had an interesting premise in hand but the formulaic investigative elements weighed down the whole event. Prithviraj is fit and makes an earnest performance, while Aditi Balan in her limited screen space leaves an impression. Happy to see late Anil Nedumangad in a full-fledged character though his dubbing sucks.
Cold Case is a muddled affair and the director seems confused whether to treat it as a horror movie or thriller. It could've been a far better product with a better treatment. Amidst great expectations Cold Case ends up as a dish that is served cold.

Sweet Tooth Review : Sweet Tooth is a lovely story about a hybrid child

Sweet Tooth (2021) bingeholics

BingeHolics Rating

Gus may have antlers like a deer, but he’s a puppy dog at heart. The main character of an American fantasy drama streaming television series developed by Jim Mickle. Produced by Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey, based on the comic by Jeff Lemire, is a young boy struggling to survive in a world ravaged by a pandemic.

Sweet Tooth is a lovely story about a hybrid child who after the death of his father, goes on a perilous journey in search of his mother in Colorado.

There are other characters too whose stories becomes relevant along the way. It's beautifully written and a special mention to Christian Convery for making his character Gus a delight.

The chemistry between Gus and Tommy Jepperd is as sweet as a caramel apple!

Sweet Tooth offers something different and clever and it's paid off. It's enchanting and we were glued as soon as we saw the frankly adorable hybrid babies. The whole thing is comic book personified. We loved it.

We wholeheartedly recommend this series ❤

'Ameera' movie review : Socially relevant movie as expected

'Ameera' is a film directed by Riyaz Mohammad, starring Meenakshi in the lead role. Produced by Anil Kumar under the banner of GWK Entertainments Team and December Mist, the film was released on OTT through First Show. Amira, one of the films that overcame covid's threat, says about the challenges and problems faced by the children of an intercast couple.

The main characters in the story are Amin and Ameera who get on a bus with their grandmother from Uttar Pradesh to a hilly village in Kerala. Amin and Amira are the children of Ahmed Qureshi and his wife who were killed in the UP riots. After the death of her parents, her grandmother returned home with the children to find their old home. Abdullah/Abdukka, a local and friendly man, comes to the rescue as they enter a new place with many mysteries.
Abdukka and his wife Jameela, who lost their only son and runs a stationery shop for a living felt an inextricable bond for Amira and Amin and they take on the responsibilities of the children from their grandmother and request them to live in their house.

But in the days that followed, Abduqa's surroundings sought to shed the light of sectarianism to both his and the children's life
and so on..
The film deals with a number of social issues.

Actors Ramesh Kottayam and Meenakshi did well with their characters and we can expect more valuable films from the director Muhammad Riyas in the future.

It's a good binge-watch!

Mare of Easttown Review: perfectly balances mystery and drama

BingeHolics Rating

Our life's aren't easy all the time. Most of us have to deal with our own inner conflicts and problems. Mare of Easttown isn't just a crime drama but sets the bar high with its strong emotional quotient. Mare, a detective of Easttown who is coping with a personal loss and dysfunctional family gets sucked into a web of murders. As the mystery unfolds, more things in her life start to make a difference. This seven episode limited series is a baggage of mystery and emotions. I would like to call this an emotional drama reducing it to a thriller zone. As each episode passes we are taken deep into the life of Mare and the people of East town. Mare of East town perfectly balances mystery and drama thus creating an impact on the minds of viewers. Each episode ends on a cliffhanger and leaves us no clue of what's happening. The interrogation and findings are so natural and there aren't any usual cinematic gimmicks. The final reveal was convincing and ends the show on a high note. Kate Winslet, the soul of the show, is in her best form. She is exceptional as the emotionally unstable, grieving mother and an intelligent detective. Portraying such a complex character needs focus and she does it with ease. This 7 hour long journey through Easttown make us feel for them. Mare of Easttown is the most brilliantly written emotional thriller that deserves to be on your watchlist. DON'T MISS.

Maya Review : A writer who creates another world with his pen and paper

 BingeHolics Rating

A writer is one who creates another world with his pen and paper. But we aren't aware of the pain they go through to create such fantasy worlds. Ani IV Sasi's Maya talks about Ashok, a film writer who is struggling to create a commercial story for his next film and the ways he creates different sets of stories to reach his final destination. Some stories don't have a long runtime or elaborate set works. Maya works beautifully in its short runtime, this 11 minute short story is full of life and tracks the hardship faced by a writer. Ashok Selvan easily transforms into the character and the way he enacts various situations is a treat. Priya Anand as the mysterious Maya makes an impressive appearance. It's the dialogues that keeps a film alive and I really loved the dialogues and the way Ashok presented it. Music by Ron Ethan Yohann and Visuals by Divakar Mani keeps the short lively and makes it more charming. On the whole Maya is a simple, sweet and adorable story from the makers of Ninnila Ninnila.

The Family Man Season 02 Review: riveting thriller and justifies the hype created by first season

BingeHolics Rating

In this second edition espionage thriller, director duo Raj & DK seems more matured as a writer and handles emotions quite effectively. We are introduced to Srikanth Tiwari who has left TASC following the events of season one. He is now a Corporate employee and his family life is in crisis. We are also taken into the world of Tamil Rebels who plan to assassinate The PM. The Family Man 2 is a war between good v/s good and it ensures to be gripping from the introduction sequence. What happens rest is a rollercoaster ride of thrills and action. Unlike the first season the tone is much darker and twisted. Raj & DK never rush to the proceedings thus it may look a bit unsettling in the first four episodes. Once the main premise is introduced this captivating thriller doesn't turn back. The political agendas and statements are loud and strong, the tamil rebels and their fight for freedom are handled with much care and doesn't leave any space for criticisms. Since the plot revolves around Chennai, most of the episodes feature strong Tamil dialogue and it's worth mentioning the effort taken by the crew in portraying the real and authentic Chennai city. Manoj Bajpai once again proves why he's the best in the field. An epitome of acting who excels as the confused, intelligent and vulnerable Tiwari. But it's Samantha Akkineni who grabs all the attention. Despite being slapped with a thick layer of brown face, her stupendous act as the Rebel leader is worth watching. She transforms into a lethal killer astonishingly and is fabulous in few jaw dropping action scenes. Sharib Hashmi, the constant companion to Srikanth is witty. Rest of the cast makes sure everything is in the right place. There are several subplots and the director duo cleverly manages to merge it with the main plot. The initial hour is just a setup and at the end everything starts making sense. The sumptuous set works and few exceptionally well shot single take action episodes by Cameron Eric Bryson are a huge boost for the show. Despite minor inconsistencies The Family Man 2 is a riveting thriller and justifies the hype created by first season.
